Watch List: The Gold Magnolias - Got To Believe
The Gold Magnolias are a self-described 'bunch of southern boys fighting their way through the noise', with a sound they call 'Southern soul'. With band members Evan Felts, Hudson Mueller, Daniel Foose, and Jeff Barton all hailing from the southern states, and Ryan Anselmi from Kansas, the group came together in 2009 in New York steeped in the traditions of blues, soul and jazz. Influences on various members of the band include Stevie Wonder, Al Green, Otis Redding, Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton, and the band honed their sound playing 'dive bars and a lot of regular gigs in some interesting places, so to speak. So we just have a lot of experience playing together and playing these songs for a long time'. They later went on to play in venues such as the Rockwood Music Hall and the Shrine in Harlem, and in 2011 they released the album 'The Gold Magnolias'. The album was recorded live at the Magnolia Hotel, with Evan saying 'I mean we are a live band. Period. I mean, like, we recorded our album live. We play shows live. We are very performance based - a very performance driven band'. Here they perform 'Got to Believe' from the album, and, below, is their video for 'Southern Man'.
