Watch List: Raquel Rodriguez - Valerie
Los Angeles native Raquel Rodriguez has been "singing for a long time", with a singing style that is a "mix of R&B, soul, jazz...it's definitely a combination of a lot of stuff, my roots have always been in, like, the old school, R&B, soul stuff, like Donnie Hathaway, Marvin Gaye, Etta James kind of stuff", as well as being influenced by more recent artists such as Amy Winehouse and Adele. She attended the Hamilton High School Academy of Music, and was subsequently accepted into the Thornton School of Music at USC where she participated in the Jazz Studies program. She and her 6-piece band, The Big Guys, have opened for J.Cole and Big Sean, won the 2012 College Battle of the Bands, and have gained attention with their performances in some of the top venues in Southern California, including the House of Blues and the Roxy. She released a six song EP earlier this year, and here she gives us firstly her take, courtesy of KnocksteadyTV, on 'Valerie' by Amy Winehouse, and, below, 'Lady Luck' by Jamie Woon.
