Watch List: Iyeoka Okoawo - Simply Falling
Boston born first-generation Nigerian-American Iyeoka Okoawo is a poet/singer who looks to 'invoke the spirit of... Nina Simone, Sade, Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse'. She started in music by founding the musical collective The Rock by Funk Tribe, where she fused her poetry with music, and began by releasing two albums of poem-songs, 'Black and Blues' (2004) and 'Hum the Bass Line' (2007). In 2009 she decided to approach songwriting from a more traditional perspective and subsequently released two EPs during the year, 'This Time Around' and 'Run Into The Rain'. In November 2010 she released 'Say Yes' through artist development company Underground Sun, with the concept of it being an 'Evolving Album(tm)' whereby having "realized that our collective, our tribe, of people that are excited about the project 'Say Yes' is growing...although we were going to lock down, you know, nine songs and two poems..there was still more we wanted to do...coming up with the Evolving Album concept was really to help influence people getting involved in re-mixes for the album, or getting us inspired to record different versions of it." Here she sings 'Simply Falling' and, below, 'Say Yes'.
