Watch List: Tessa Evans - Unaware
Inspired by Allen Stone's 'Unaware', Sacramento singer/songwriter Tessa Evans gives her own inimitable rendition as she sings with delicate control, her sultry, breathy, rasp flecked voice at times vulnerable, at times playful, a smooth confidence underpinning her delivery, with Evans saying 'my approach to recording is - real...I have a more old-school approach of like "Here are my vocals"...I always keep it raw, because it's a real voice'. Her aim is to make 'Eclectric (Edgy, Eclectic, Electric) soul music', saying 'I describe my sound as adult contemporary. That's a pretty broad term, but my sound ranges from soul music, to edgy alternative tracks, to everything in-between'. She says her dad 'probably had the biggest influence on my music. Growing up we listened to everything from jazz, soul, metal, rock, pop, r&b, almost everything under the sun. But...my first love as far as singers go was Billie Holiday. Something about the struggle in her voice was very comforting to me'.
Evans began singing lessons at six, 'it was just a hobby for a long time...it was a way for me to open up', but by sixteen had progressed to the point where she won acceptance to the Berklee College of Music, but, eager to learn at the coal face, she turned down the opportunity and struck out with her band to get real world experience and perform on the live music circuit. Having put an earlier mixtape on hold due to a contract expiration, and with several of her initial releases, 'Jezebel', 'She Will', 'Quickie', gaining people's attention, she is now managed by Jason Geter (T.I., Strivers Row Clothing, Grand Hustle Records) and is currently writing for the future with the Grammy-winning producers J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, Drumma Boy, Lil C and others.
