Composer, pianist and singer Margel Overton, also known as Margel theSophant, was born in Haiti and came to America at the age of two. Beginning classical piano lessons at the age of six, it became apparent he had an aptitude for it, and as a teenager he won scholarships to the Settlement School of Music, Princeton University and the Nelly Berman School of Music. This aptitude for music saw him win the New Jersey Marion Anderson Music Guild Competition for three years in a row, and in 2004 he received the Presidential Scholarship from the University of the Arts, and proceeded to graduate in 2008 with a B.A. in Jazz Performance, Piano. He has taught piano, and also oversees music project based learning programming for Education Work's Youth Media Initiative, teaching music production, piano and performance. In addition, Margel is a member of the hip-hop collective Sela, where he plays keys, composes and sings. Here he gives us his own arrangement of Bob Marley's 'Is This Love', and, below, he plays us his own composition 'I Think I Broke Something', performed with Ableton Live and Reason 5.
