Watch List: John Newman - Cheating
21-year-old John Newman is a singer/songwriter from the U.K., and his gritty, raspy voice has seen him gaining increased attention across the U.K.. His earliest memory of music sees him 'thinking as far back as I can, I'm hearing The Supremes - Baby Love, my Mum is a massive Diana Ross and Motown fan, as am I'. He started playing the guitar and making music at age 14, learning how to record and produce by himself, and he says 'I was very much into house music, I was DJ'ing and producing from a young age and it was funky house that dominated my sets and software. At 16 I discovered an album that changed my life and my music "Otis Redding - Otis Sings Soul"'. These influences came together to make a sound that is described as 'the pure soul and groove of early Stax and Motown. Throw in some tasty James Brown and Prince, dirty it up a bit with some Black Keys and...why not mix it all together with a bit of Dangermouse'. He came to increased prominence when he featured on Rudimental's track 'Feel the Love' , making live performances with Rudimental on the likes of Jools Holland, T4 and BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe. He is in the process of recording his own album, and here he performs his song 'Cheating', and, below, a song he wrote with Rudimental 'Not Giving In'.
