Watch List: Davina and The Vagabonds - I'd Rather Go Blind
Davina and The Vagabonds is a Twin Cities, Minnesota, based band that plays blues/jazz/roots music and is known as 'being the busiest band in town'. The band is fronted by singer Davina Sowers, a classically trained pianist, who describes the band as 'a five-piece genre bending, melting pot of music', and she is supported by band members Michael Carvale, Alec Tackmann, Dan Eikmeier and Ben Link. Davina was living in Key West, Florida, busking, when she met and fell in love with Michael Carvale, and soon moved to the Twin Cities where she wrote her first song 'Finally Home', which describes her feeling that 'I finally had a place, which is a pretty good feeling'. She says the band's sound is a 'new spin on on old sound. People say blues, people say New Orleans jazz, people say Tom Waits. I say Davina and The Vagabonds.' Davina says when she is arranging a song 'I already have an idea in my head as a whole what it sounds like, it's like painting a picture, I'm sure, where you just know the outcome you want it to be.' The band have released three albums, 'Under Lock and Key' (2008), 'Live @ The Times' (2009) and 'Black Cloud' (2011), and Davina says 'when I have the opportunity to play music in front of people, I take it, because I do enjoy it so much. I really try to show the audience how I'm feeling, because the song generates a feeling within me, it's just really wonderful that I can share that with a group of people.' Here the band performs 'I'd Rather Go Blind' by Etta James, and, below, 'Pocket'.
