'The Only Way Is Up' For Midé And His New EP
We have watched on with interest over the last few years as U.K. singer/songwriter Midé has come into his own as an artist, maturing aesthetically and sonically from the intimate, acoustic/folk stylings of his beginnings to the more melodic and soulful offerings of his recent work. Blessed with a voice that possesses an ear-catchingly smooth, soul-brushed tone, most impressive always has been his confessional, insightful and emotionally resonant songwriting that has sought to address the complexities and questions that we all face as both individuals and as a society, the effortless quality of which has seen him be lauded by the likes of MTV, MOBO and BBC 1Xtra.
Following up the release of the title track, 'The Only Way Is Up', Midé has just released his new EP, a collection of four songs that represent his most confident and cohesive work to date. Plugging in his electric guitar, Midé displays the further maturation of his artistic sensibility with the seamless integration of his folk, pop and soul instincts, his warmly engaging vocals couched amongst the polished sophistication of the EP's ear-catching arrangements.
'I Can't Let A Day Go By' sees punchy drums and guitar-and-organ rock-hues chart Midé's urgent vow to not 'let a day go by' while he seeks to take responsibility for 'being-the-change-that-he-wants-to-see' in his world, with Midé promising to not 'do the same old things, as a lesson to my son'; 'Oh Love''s poignant guitar, muted percussion and swelling chorus conjure a ruminative and hauntingly moving ambience as the emotive beauty of Midé's yearning, plaintive vocals call out to a hesitant love, 'I say love let's try again, let's try again'; 'Smoke Gets In Your Eyes' has an expressive guitar motif and punctuated, funky lick, bass pulse and melodic urgency guiding Midé as he tugs at the protagonist's social conscience, addressing her alienation and offering sage advice in the face of her indifference to her community's issues, 'you don't have to walk in the fire for the smoke to reach your eyes'.
Drawing on disparate influences for its sonic palette, yet cohesive in its artistic sensibility, Midé's 'The Only Way Is Up' EP further showcases the maturity, insight and sophistication of one of the U.K.'s most promising emerging artists. Uplifting; encouraging; socially aware; confessional; vulnerable; heartfelt; through his willingness to honestly address the human condition, Midé continues to showcase with his fearless, authentic and thought-provoking artistry a talent of rare appeal.
