Watch List: Ray Jones - American Boy
The name may have a touch of the ambiguous about it, but, as seen in this fantastic rendition of Estelle's 'American Boy', the talent is clear...25-year-old UK singer /songwriter Ray Jones is bringing her refreshingly authentic vintage soul, doo-wop and girl-group harmony infused sound to the music scene, an unaffected, from-the-heart sensibility informing her throwback vibe as she puts her unique twist on familiar foundations, her soulful voice imbued with warmth, honesty and emotion as she looks to invite the listener to recall a time when sincerity was at the heart of great music.
The London based singer was born to a Jamaican mother and an English father, and has been influenced by the greats from many eras, including the likes of Chaka Khan, Babra Acklin, Roberta Flack, Erykah Badu and Jill Scott, drawing inspiration for her songwriting from keywords on the sleeves of the vinyl records she collects. In 2012 she connected with producer Ian Barter (Amy Winehouse - 'Frank') to work on her signature retro-meets-today sound, the result impressing to the point that she soon was picking up gigs at The Troubadour, The Regal Rooms, The Bedford and a residency at legendary Soho nightspot, Ronnie Scott’s.
Her debut EP 'Chapter 1' surged into the top ten on the iTunes R&B/Soul charts upon release, with her songs 'My Love' and 'Drink With Me' picking up radio play on Choice FM, the buzz around her music seeing her invited to appear at the Wired showcase at Concrete in London, and, as she continues to catch the attention of the wider music scene, Jones says, 'I'd die happy if I could wake up in the morning and my job was writing music, or singing it. Regardless of any fame or fortune that comes with it – it's important that, when you do something you love, you leave your mark on the world no matter how small it is...I just want to make music I'm proud of'.
