Watch List: Maggie Koerner - Neutral Ground (Live)
There is no artifice, no pretence, when Shreveport native, and now New Orleans resident, Maggie Koerner steps up to the mic - her artlessly passionate intensity and intuitive musicality is infused with the sultry, earthy spirit of the bayou, her voice a captivating instrument that channels an instinctively spiritual connection with the deepest currents of her emotions as it both soars defiantly with a blisteringly raw, organic grit and speaks in hushed tones of tender vulnerabilities with touching nuance and the subtlest of inflections as she fearlessly contemplates the spectral margins and vagaries of the human heart and soul.
Having released her 'Quarter Life' album in 2011, the Catholic-raised Koerner at 25 made the move from Shreveport to New Orleans, telling inweekly.net 'Shreveport has some of the best singer/songwriters I've ever heard. Maybe some of them will never be heard...I needed to get out of the town, though, because I didn't want to get stuck playing only there'. Connecting in New Orleans with local bands The Revivalists and Galactic, the latter with which she has recently been touring with across the U.S., she last year released her 'Neutral Ground' album and the accompanying long-form music video for the title track (below), an artfully shot interpretation of 'the transformational space where the soul is reincarnated. Stemmed and rooted deep down into center of all spirits is the ability to seek infinite light, love, and compassion.'
If you are in Los Angeles, you can catch Koerner and her solo show at the Hotel Cafe on April 14th.
