WATCH LIST: Like Pacific Have Heart
Like Pacific is a name you should really start to remember if you are a fan of music that is real and honest. The band is made up of vocalist Jordan Black, bassist Chris Thaung, guitarist Greg Hall, guitarist Luke Holmes, and drummer Dillon Forret. The Toronto-based melodic pop punk band is on a path to a bright future.
Signed to Pure Noise Records, the group shares the roster with other notable bands on the rise such as State Champs, Knocked Loose and Stick to Your Guns. Like Pacific’s first full length only came out 5 months ago and people are already buzzing. Distant Like You Asked is all about being personal. It's simply a piece of art many, many people can connect to. The first track on the album, “Richmond,” jumps right into the heartache and the empirical observations of life.
“You don't think before you speak and your interests are not for me / But I'm so alone I need to receive some attention I've been paid.”
Jordan Black’s vocals are therapeutic and they feel like a release of bottled-up emotions. Stay Pissed.
The most popular song off of Distant Like You Asked is probably “Distant.” “Distant” was a song that got stuck in my head days after I heard it for the first time. The chorus line “I felt your love, your stupid love that you had wasted all on me / Taste the bitterness of me / I hope you sob, I hope you weep” is one where you just say “damn” after hearing it. The video for the song tells the story of a man struggling to cope with a falling apart relationship with a girl he used to care about immensely. Thank you Like Pacific for creating songs with lyrics we could maybe one day indirectly tweet about an ex with.
We got the chance to watch Like Pacific play on the Vans Warped Tour at the New Jersey stop of the tour. All we could think throughout the set was how they deserved to be on a larger stage. If you’re not familiar with how Warped Tour is run, there are multiple stages going on at the same time and bands play certain stages all summer based on the size of their fanbases. If Like Pacific keeps doing what they are doing they should be on a journey to being able to play main stage down the line. This year you can find them on the Full Sail University. We heard multiple passerby people ask "wait, who is this?"
In the heart of the set, “Assisted Breathing” really caught our ear with the catchy, stereo guitar riff where one guitarist plays something and then the other finishes the phrase/measure. Of course the last song “Distant” was one of the most hard-hitting as well. At one point Jordan jumped down to the barricade to have the crowd yell the lyrics right back at his face. Overall, Like Pacific are entertaining professionals; there is nothing amateur about them. Dillon Forret is brilliant with his drum fills, the string section knows how to move around and get into it without missing a beat and Jordan Black is intense enough for you to feel his soul. (It is also very important to note how Jordan randomly would do the whip or the dab when you least expected. It served as a cherry on top.) Give these guys a listen ASAP.
