Watch List: Efya - Life
Ghanaian singer Efya speaks of her musical journey and the determination she has to make her music no matter the obstacles, her impassioned vocal declaring 'when I used to dream of being me/taking my music that rescued me/in my nightmare, I do this for the music'. Singing from the age of nine, Efya describes her style as 'afro-neo-soul', when 'you mix afro-beats with neo-soul beats and try to make it sound like something that somebody can relate to...I'm trying to find somewhere where I can fit in between...I love soul music, you know, and jazz, and r&b, but then how can you mix that with the African beats...so that is what we are doing'.
She got her musical beginnings as first runner up in the Ghanaian talent show Charter House - Stars Of The Future, and as a spin off became part of a group, Irene and Jane, releasing an album. After leaving the group, she performed with, and featured on the music of, many Ghanaian and Nigerian artists, and is now set to release her debut solo album, 'Love Genesis', from which the song 'Life' is taken, and below is footage of her performing live in New York, including her unique rendition of Whitney Houston's 'I Will Always Love You'.
