Watch List: Edei Finds Comfort From Her 'Trouble'(s)
RH Music artist Edei may be known to those at the label as a 'jester', saying 'I just don't take life too seriously', but there is something she is serious about - her music. Her voice an engaging mix of emotionally eloquent sensitivities and a warmly soul-burnished tone - those qualities in evidence here with her cover of Ray LaMontagne's 'Trouble' - what stands out the most is her commitment not to compromise when it comes to her sense of artistic integrity.
Passing on opportunities along the way for girl groups and T.V. talent shows, Edei has continued to pursue her own distinctive vision as she has worked towards creating a non-manufactured pop, soul and funk inspired sound of her own, her maturely considered musical aesthetic reflected in her explanation that 'what I really want to do - which is what they did in the Motown days - is record the entire album just live in a studio...we'll rehearse for two months straight as if we are doing the biggest gig of our lives, and then we'll get in the studio and literally record the whole thing live; that's my kind of dream record'.
Having grown up performing in London's West End, including in shows like 'Les Miserables' and 'Annie' (which led her to perform 'Hard Knock Life' with Jay-Z on 'Top Of The Pops'), Edei would later go on to find an outlet through songwriting for the dissatisfaction she felt while studying drama full time. Inspired musically by the likes of Rod Stewart, Marvin Gaye, Patti LaBelle, Michael Jackson, Lauryn Hill and Gavin DeGraw, her song 'Loved' was both the the 'Record of The Week' five weeks in a row on BBC 2 and the fourth most played love song of 2012 in the U.K.. Having toured with U.K. stars JLS and Girls Aloud, and headlined the Isle Of Wight Festival, she has in recent times been recording in the U.S. with renowned producers and DJ's like Mark Batson (Eminem, Alicia Keys, Dave Matthews Band) and Samantha Ronson (Roc Nation), and just played her first Los Angeles gig at the famous Hotel Cafe.
