Watch List: Why Donna Missal Is Fierce
Donna Missal has a little something for everyone. If you are a fan of good music in general you will enjoy at least one of Missal's songs. The New Jersey songwriter has three tracks on her Soundcloud page: "Keep Lying," "Sick," and a cover of Drake's "Hotline Bling." Each song shows off a vastly different side of the arsenal this new force in music has to offer a listener. All in all, Donna Missal has a genuine gift and I hope it propels her into a giant career.
"Keep Lying" was the debut single out late last year. This song features absolutely massive choruses that are right in your face in the best of ways. The lyrics are a total callout to someone that stabbed Donna Missal in the back by using her. When she comes in with "Baby, I've known lonely / So let me down, slowly / You owe me" it will send chills throughout your body. I think the emotion Missal puts into her music is easily felt by the listener.
"Sick" is totally different than "Keep Lying" and it works. "Sick" is laid back and more vibey. It features vocals, bass guitar, and percussion as the primary instruments. Sometimes simple is all you need and once again the lyrics are beautifully constructed and powerful. "You go to my head / Hypnotize me with your sick magic / You go to my head / Under my skin like a pinprick" puts such imaginary in one's mind because we can all connect in some way.
You've probably heard a million different covers of "Hotline Bling" by Drake but I'm going on record here to say I think Donna Missal's version is the best one. This blues rock version makes me wish it was her original song. The groovy instrumentation and the wide range of the vocals just make you want to dance the night away.
Donna Missal will be out on the Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Deathcab For Cutie, Halsey, Fetty Wap, amongst many others. Keep an eye out for other news related to this on-the-rise artist.
