Watch List: Andria Simone ft Those Guys - Nothing Comes Easy (Live)
Up and coming Canadian soulstress Andria Simone is in no doubt about where her passion lies when it comes to sharing her music with people, saying 'I would rather sing live than hear my songs playing somewhere...I really do leave it all there, onstage. I perform my soul out of my body', and here she lives up to her word as she showcases her passionately raw and gritty powerhouse vocals with a live rendition of the rockingly soulful 'Nothing Comes Easy', taken from her 2012 EP of the same name.
Born in Toronto, Simone began singing at a young age, studying flute, piano and voice as she developed a love of writing, 'I've always enjoyed writing and poetry and getting my feelings out on paper'. Initially influenced by everything from metal to dubstep, she more recently realized she had a natural affinity for soul/r&b, 'I'd love to go back in a time machine to the '50s and '60s and dance to that live music...I prefer the real raw sound of the voice, not the AutoTune sounds of today', and a year spent in the Ukraine at age 19 singing along to an Amy Winehouse CD saw her recognize her ability to 'mimic this singer...showing me that maybe I should be pursuing this. When I came home, I told everybody I was a singer!'.
On her return to Toronto she connected with Juno-winning producer Greg Kavanagh and songwriter Demetri James, impressing them to the point that they quickly made Simone the focal point of their new Artist-Tree Music Group venture, with Kavanagh saying 'I've been in this business a long time and I've never come across such an all-in package...Andria is a rare bird and the real deal', the trio soon combining creatively to realize Simone's artistic vision, 'I don't even understand how it happens, but we've been coming up with songs so quickly. We've been finishing a song in 45 minutes then recording it in an hour. I had worked with other producers earlier, but I've never felt as confident and comfortable as I have with Greg and Demetri. I have finally found my niche with them', using a horn section, B3 organ and female backing vocals on every track on her 2012 EP 'Nothing Comes Easy' to create her distinctively charismatic fusion of old and new that has been catching people's attention in both Canada and the wider musical world.
