Watch List: Amy LaCour - Mess Around
With a jazzy sophistication informing her warmly mature and instinctively soul-infused vocal tone and delivery, Bay Area based singer/songwriter Amy LaCour fashions her refreshingly contemporary amalgam of the blues, soul, folk and jazz with a reverential eclecticsm, saying 'in order to remain inspired, I have to listen to all types of music', drawing her inspiration from legends such as Roberta Flack, Nina Simone, Bill Withers, Richie Havens, Stevie Wonder and Joni Mitchell as she looks to put her own uniquely creative spin on the collective essence and ethos of those musical traditions. Here, as part of her 'Sonora Sessions' project, she enters the studio to put her unique touch to Ray Charles' 'Mess Around' as well as performing her original songs, 'Radio Static' and 'The Woman In Your Life'.
Growing up in Seattle, LaCour was inspired by her fathers record collection that included classic soul, pop and jazz records by the likes of Stevie Wonder, George Benson, Chaka Khan, The Commodores and Earth, Wind & Fire, going on to receive her formal musical education at Columbia University while honing her skills through performing and touring with local bands. Having released two recordings on her own Voice Recordings label, 'Bitter Suite' (2007) and 'The Upswing' (2010), she is currently in the process of getting ready to release her upcoming album, 'Yes!'.
