Watch List: Amanda Cole Asks 'How Will I Know'
Here at Next2Shine it is a given that the incomparable Whitney Houston's voice was, and still is, the absolute gold standard against which all other singers are measured - Whitney's extraordinary power, range, control and emotionally intuitive expressiveness were untouchable. As such, it is often a vain exercise when listening to the myriad of attempts that are made to cover the legend's songs - a notable recent exception being Sam Smith's amazing rendition of 'How Will I Know' - so when we came across Amanda Cole's version of the same song, it was a refreshing surprise to discover a voice that can certainly do justice to Whitney's legacy.
Powerful, yet capable of the most sensitive of articulations, Cole's hugely impressive voice combines a full, resonant tone with dexterous control and pin-point embellishments, moving from a delicately whispered hush to soaring crescendos with effortless fluency, allowing her to tackle songs that are as vocally demanding as Whitney's with a facility that promises much for the future.
Schooled vocally in the church, Cole performed in talent competitions before pursuing a degree in musical theater, later leaving to take up the opportunity to become a member of legendary En Vouge when Dawn Robinson and Maxine Jones left the group. Now working on original material of her own with producer Christopher Starr after performing around the world in stage and theater, she says with her own music she is hoping to 'bring back an element of what’s lost in music...especially when it comes to love and how we relate to each other and communicate with each other. I wanted to try to bring back the magic. Love is multi-dimensional and no one is really bringing that dimension of love to the forefront'.
