Watch List: ALQ Ponder 'How D'It Get This Late'
Setting our musical heart aflutter with her enchanting aura, U.K. singer/songwriter Anoushka Lucas had us under her spell at first listen last year with the dreamy charm and mature sophistication of her jazz/pop/soul sound. Possessing an instinctively jazzy vocal tone that is effortlessly infused with subtle, tender sensitivities and delicate articulations, the London-based Oxford graduate proved captivating with her emotionally literate and knowingly observant lyrical take on life and love.
Following a serendipitous meeting of musical minds, Lucas has recently branched out with a new endeavor, the ALQ - Anoushka Lucas Quartet. Joined by highly regarded musicians Glen Scott (keys, vocals), Martin Terefe (bass, vocals) and Karl Brazil (drums, vocals), Lucas has been in the studio for the last year fleshing out their newly minted 'sexy, funny, funky sound'. Whatever they did obviously worked, with their first offering, 'How D'It Get This Late' finding its way to being premiered by Jamie Cullen on his BBC Radio 2 jazz show. With the band having already been booked for the SPIEGELTENT at the Canterbury Festival in October, here they take to the Kensaltown Studios to give an absorbing live rendition of 'How D'It Get This Late''s jazzy, ruminative intricacies and giddy sophistication as Lucas muses about an intoxicating first meeting.
