SXSW Music Festival 2015 Day Two
The SXSW craziness isn’t letting up. We were mesmerized by masked-rapper Leikeli47, intoxicated with The Weeknd’s remix of Beyonce’s “Drunk In Love,” and overheard conversations about breastfeeding. Check out our second glimpse of the festival below.
Best performance: The wait was hour long to get into the Coppertank Events Center where Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd, was playing. But it was worth it. From his steamy Beyonce remix and mixtape classics to performances of newer bedroom-ready staples like “Love Me Harder” and bonafide smash “Earned It,” the alt-R&B crooner kept momentum going for an entire 60-minute set.
Most Bizarre Performance: Kero Kero Bonito
With multiple outfit changes, the occasional verse (or ten) sung in Japanese, and just an overall eccentric energy, Kero Kero Bonito prove they’re nothing like your average pop group. It doesn’t get much wackier than lead singer, Sarah Perry Midori, pulling out a graduation cap, gown and custom Kero Kero Bonito diploma during their track “No Graduation.”
The Lady Rapper To Watch Out For: Nicki, look out.
Once Leikeli47 took The Cookout stage – with her crew in matching, all-black outfits and ski masks – there was no way she was losing anyones attention. She brought some killer rhymes and a commanding presence that could even give Nicki Minaj a run for her money.
Overheard at the AM Only/ Dream Hotel Cookout bathroom: “I think I’m healthy to this day because I was breastfed.” ...Yeah, we’ll let you decide what to make of this.
Biggest Bummer: We were pretty excited to hear that ILoveMakonnen was going to Dream Hotel’s Cookout. But we were left slightly underwhelmed when he only stayed for three songs. (If you were wondering, yes, he did play “Tuesday,” and yes, we did turn up for at least that.)

Best BBQ: AM Only partnered with Dream Hotel to put on one of the sickest day parties we’ve seen this week in Austin. The stacked bill, featuring Marian Hill, Skylar Spence, and Hudson Mohawk, only stood second to the delicious BBQ snacks and drinks on hand. We’re talking pulled pork, potato salad, the whole nine yards. Gotta give our props where it’s due – this was a BBQ fanatic’s wet dream.
Rejuvenating jam: At Tumblr IRL, Seattle electro duo Odesza’s “Say My Name,” featuring Zyra’s Alex Cheatle, was the perfect 1 a.m. pick-me-up after a tiring day on the SXSW frontlines.
