Rotana Makes A Statement On Debut Single "Daddy"
LA-based Rotana is new artistic name from the conservative environment of Saudi Arabia. In 2013, she moved to the US on an employee scholarship and began pursuing music on the side as she went for her Master's Degree at USC Annenberg School of Journalism. From there it was time to quit her job and go for the arts full time.
The debut single comes in the form of a song called "Daddy." The word is often attributed to some odd meanings but Rotana cleared the air:
"It’s about the moment you step into your power. It’s the decision to be fully, totally unapologetically who you are. In that moment, you aren’t scared of shit. In that moment, it’s all heat, power and ‘Whachu gon’ do, Daddy?’ Daddy is the oppressor, the bully. Daddy is societal boundaries, the obsession with celebrity and wealth, anything that requires you to dilute yourself. Daddy is the voice in your head that has convinced you, you can’t."
The symbolized song about power is proudly represented in the aggressively forward vocalizations. Instrumentally, the track takes on a layered effect of multiple lines of percussion and backup harmony instances. All together Rotana proves to be someone you should maybe start listening to.
