Watch List: Listen Closely As Roméo Testa Acknowledges Those That Are 'Still Misunderstood'
Highlighting his precocious talent, the versatility of Costa Rican-born Roméo Testa's tempered vocal grit is underpinned by an instinctive appreciation for the most subtle of emotional expressions and hues, lending a poised maturity to the soulful instincts and thoughtful, confessional lyricism that inhabit his blend of contemporary pop and hip-hop influenced songwriting, in evidence here with a movingly stripped back version of 'Still Misunderstood', taken from his 'The End' EP.
Raised in Los Angeles, Testa grew up influenced by legends such as The Beatles, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters and John Mayer, with his interest later extending to 'old-school Dre and Dirty South stuff. I always try to get some of those sounds in there'. Starting with the violin at age seven, he pursued his musical dream with help from the Harmony project that provides funds for inner-city musical education in the Los Angeles public school system, beginning songwriting at age eleven and later going on to study at the prestigious Interlochen Music School in Northern Michigan.
Signed by Columbia Records, he spent the last two years crafting his musical point of view, culminating earlier in the year with the release of his 'The End' EP. Saying 'this EP represents me as a person and a musician, my taste in music and everything I want to stand for', Testa sees it as a testament to 'all the stuff I’ve learned, and all the people I’ve had the chance to work with...I feel like I’ve spent the last few years doing nothing but music in this magnified environment. I can’t stress how far I’ve come'.
