Review: Mateo - We’ve Met Before
Interscope recording artist Mateo is back with a new EP titled “We’ve Met Before” which features 5 songs including his current single “How Good Is Your Love” that serves as his debut single. The EP features production from Kerry “Krucial” Brothers and Zeke MacUmber while featuring a great blend of R&B and alternative music.
1.” How Good Is Your Love” is a smooth mid tempo number that finds him displaying his falsetto so smoothly and passionately over a great production. The song talks about finding about him finding the girl of his dreams who ticks all the boxes to the type of girl he want to share his life with but he main question he wants to know is how good is her love because like any relationship it will face some tough times and he wants to know will she be there by his side through it all and help their love grow strong.
The track is beautifully put together with a great build-up during the bridge which saw him delivering a good vocal performance with a lot of emotion.
Watch the David Telles directed visual for the single sees Mateo daydreaming about making love to one of his female co-workers but snaps back to reality when his boss played by Kerry "Krucial" Brothers tells him to get back to work.
2. “I Miss You” is a slick mid-tempo number with a piano-drum driven production which creates a great foundation for him to lay down some smooth vocals with a lot of heart as he sings about having a hard time letting go of an old relationship and he misses the love he shared with his ex. This is the strongest song on the EP because all the elements came together beautifully from the production to the lyrics to his heartfelt and sincere vocal delivery.
3. “After Dark” is a heartfelt ballad about making love, it`s laced up with poetical lyrics and a sultry vocal delivery over a smooth production. His approach on this track is very committing which allows him to paint out image from the lyrics, creating a perfect mood for you to grab your significant other and make some sweet love.
4. “Love Is A Gun” is a heartfelt track that has a guitar-drum driven production, it first made it appearance on his previous EP “Love and Stadiums II” that was released in 2011. The track finds him displaying his sensitive side as he sings about not losing faith on a relationship that has faced some hard times and he committed to make it work if they get on the same page and make peace with the past but she got her guard up and is hurting: “Your love is a gun, ready to fire away. And I'm the target but I bruise so easily. You got your hand on the gun, you wanna just blow me away but I’m not gonna move and you don’t understand I’m not bulletproof.”
5. “Sing About Me” is aspirational track that was heavily inspired by rapper Kendrick Lamar's song of the same name, lifted from his album "good kid, m.A.A.d. city". He reworks the track by firstly stripping down the production, adding a piano-string production and writing his own verses but borrows the chorus and laces it up with a heartfelt vocal delivery.
Overall: The EP not only serves as a great introduction to many people that have yet to hear him but it also showcase his growth as a vocalist and as a songwriter. It would`ve been great to see him experimented more with different sounds and different producers to push him outside his comfort zone to be able to strength his own sound and also pushed himself more vocally. But overall this is a great EP that will surely gain him more fans and hopefully create more buzz around him.
