Nile Rodgers, Universal Music & DJ Mustard Win Big At 2015 BMI Awards
This past weekend, Broadcast Music Inc. (popularly known as BMI) held their annual Hip-Hop/R&B Award Show on a beautiful night in Beverly Hills, California. As the universal leader in music rights management and distribution, the awards highlighted the latest and greatest in these genres, gathering singers, songwriters, rappers, producers, and publishers from all over the globe.
The BMI Awards have been showcasing and honoring talents for over 75 years. Yearly, the organization hosts a handful of events to award most played BMI artists of all genres for their hard work and spectacular creations.
Amongst all the individuals present at this year's Hip-Hop/R&B awards, BMI crowned Grammy Award-winning Nile Rodgers as BMI Icon - celebrating his talents and position as a music legend.
"The first time I heard someone playing back a song I wrote -- and it wasn't me -- was the most amazing day of my life."
Joining Rodgers in receiving praise include DJ Mustard (bringing home a whopping 12 BMI awards), John Legend, Kanye West, and J. Cole to name a few. Along with these honorees, ever-so prosperous, producing-extraordinaire Polow Da Don took home a BMI Award for Nicki Minaj's Anaconda off his Zone 4 imprint (which found a new home at Epic Records), while also being awarded a VMA for this release the next day.
Universal Music Publishing Group (Ethiopia Habtemariam and Jody Gerson) received praise for Publisher of the Year for having 18 "most-performed songs". Voted and chosen by fans on socials, singer/songwriter SoMo was granted the BMI Social Star Award.
Hosting the evening was vice president of BMI (writer/publisher relations) Catherine Brewton alongside R&B vocalist Ray J.
