Ne-Yo, The Distinguished Gentleman of R&B, Sees R.E.D. in NYC
R&B artist Ne-Yo chose an intimate location in Joe's Pub to share his fifth album, "R.E.D." (which means Realizing Every Dream), with industry heavyweights on Tuesday night (October 23). Dressed comfortably in a graphic t-shirt, a blazer and dress pants along with that signature fedora, the self-proclaimed "black Sean Connery" was excited to serve his audience a healthy helping of his latest project.
Admitting that "R.E.D." boasts a dance/pop side as well as an R&B side, Ne-Yo began the session with "Forever Now" - a track from the pop portion of the album whose uptempo feel is somewhat misleading since it's actually a song about heartbreak. Venturing over to the R&B side, next up was "Carry On (Her Letter To Him)" and this is definitely sure to stir the women up while shaking the men up also; Ne-Yo describes this song's lyrics as the letter from a woman when she has had enough of her man's indiscretions - spicy material and sung with an understanding that few males can capture from a woman's perspective like Ne-Yo can.
With a resume that boasts numerous collaborations with hip-hop artists, it was only right that Ne-Yo call on a friend or two for assistance like he has in the past. "Don't Make Them Like You" features Atlantic Records' Wiz Khalifa and is an ode to the women who can hold their own and keep it classy no matter the venue or distractions.
Switching gears from strictly audio to live performing, Ne-Yo invited a special guest to help him adjust the mood a bit; Def Jam recording artist Fabolous hit the stage to perform his verse in "Should Be You", a tale of love lost due to immaturity and wishing your current flame was really the one you're missing.
Ne-Yo spoke candidly for a moment about who inspired "I Would Do Anything For You", a pop record that explains the unconditional love he'd never experienced until the birth of his two children; this song does two things - makes you tap your feet and melts your heart. Rounding out the event with "Let Me Love You" - currently the number one song on the R&B/Hip-Hop singles iTunes chart - Ne-Yo realized a dream he's had since he was nine years old and vows not to stop until his name is synonymous with every genre imaginable - yes, polka is an option as well.
"R.E.D." is a well-rounded piece of work that deserves every bit of hype it's receiving, but don't take our word for it; hit the stores on November 6th and hear for yourself! This R&B gentleman has a little something for everyone, so don't miss out. Special thanks to Malibu Red for sponsoring such a great event and providing delicious drinks throughout the night.
