Music Video: Yum Yum - Just Friends
Satiating our appetite for great new music, Australian duo Yum Yum caught our attention last year with a supremely satisfying confection of soul, hip-hop, Delta blues and dub inspired aural deliciousness that was their 'Slade Meets Jayo' EP. Originating from a serendipitously received USB stick of beats, singer Natalie Slade and beat-maker Jayo have forged a partnership that has proved most potent in its musical sophistication, with the soulful, smoky maturity of Slade's heart-weary vocal tone perfectly complemented by the bluesy, melancholically-hued gravitas of Jayo's hip-hop'n'soul infused instrumentals, here in evidence with the sultry, yearningly intense desire of their debut music video 'Just Friends'.
Explaining the impetus behind the song and video, singer Slade says 'the beat that Jayo wrote was called ‘Best Friends’’, yet the beat was so sultry and sexy, it had to be more than just a friendship! It’s about admiring a friend at a distance and then she’s either thinking to herself or saying out loud ‘will we ever be?'. I think the video captures this wondering'.
Both having worked individually with, and supported, the likes of Sola Rosa, Don McGlashan, The Blackseeds, Katalyst, Hau, Hermitude, Oddisee and Salmonella Dub amongst others, the Down Under duo are now forging their own way on the Australian music scene, including having played the Sydney Festival and received support from Triple J and Balcony TV.
