Music Video: Tess Henley - Who Are You
Recently featured by MTV.com, animated type punctuates the black-and-white visuals of Tess Henley's video for 'Who Are You', taken from her 'High Heels & Sneakers' album, as the fiercely independent Seattle soulstress sings of trying to retain her faith in 'the value of what is real and true' in a world where self-aggrandizement and an obsession with chasing distant horizons and bright lights has obscured an appreciation for what is closer at hand, the breathy confidence and natural soul of her subtly expressive voice accompanied by smooth harmonies, Rhodes and an insistent piano.
Henley began studying classical music at three, training in the famous Suzuki method, and 'grew up listening to a lot of Stevie Wonder, Jackson Five...in junior high I started to get into the neo-soul like India Arie, Musiq Soulchild, Lauryn Hill...', nurturing her passion for music by 'playing summer festivals in Seattle, I started playing bars and clubs, and then moved on to the smaller venues and then the top venues in Seattle, and kind of growing this local fan base'.
With her song 'Boy In The Window' from her 'The Appetizer' EP winning SoulTrack.com's 2011 International Best Soul Song Contest, Henley was introduced to an impressed Dice Raw from The Roots, saying 'after I met with Dice, I talked with him, I went out to Philly, I met with him, I knew that's where I wanted to record', and, after winning a much needed $25,000 in The Budweiser Super Fest songwriting competition alongside the chance to open for Jill Scott and Anthony Hamilton, she went on to record 'High Heels & Sneakers' at Larry Gold's renowned 'The Studio' with Dice and producer Khari Mateen (The Roots, Jill Scott, J*DaVeY) . Well recieved upon release, the buzz around Henley and her album continues to grow, with media praise from the likes of Bloomberg, Examiner and Soul Tracks, and you can get to know more about this singer on the rise below -
