Music Video: Soul Scratch - Heavy Heart
When a band is called on to give an encore at an industry showcase, you know they are doing something right. For Soul Scratch, just such a thing happened at our Los Angeles showcase in January, the ebullient horns and infectious grooves of their engaging, soulfully funky sound wowing the industry crowd as they 'brought the house down' with their JB's, The Meters, Ray Charles and Nina Simone inspired brand of soul music, the velvet soul of singer Dale Spollett's passionately expressive voice weaving its magic late into the night on Sunset Boulevard.
With the band bringing together members of noted Los Angeles bands - Odessa and The Q's - Soul Scratch draws on a creative group of skilled musicians experienced in genres from punk to soul, from reggae to funk, and from hip hop to progressive rock to create a retro-soul/funk insipred sound that is all their own, showcased here with the artfully animated video for the broodingly funky groove and sultry horns of 'Heavy Heart'.
Following up from 2012's 'Meet Me In The Sun' EP, the band - Johnny Chou, Joel Givertz, Adam Greenberg, Matt Reale, Ian Anderson, Joe Field, Dizzy and Dale Spollett - have just released their new album, 'Down The Road', on the Broken Complex label. Led by the superb, silky smooth and soul-infused vocal tone of singer Spollett, rock-solid grooves - both infectiously funky and soulfully mature - and triumphant, expressive horns lay the foundation for the album's refreshingly distinctive Southern California soul sound, making for a coherently sensational, retro-soul/funk inspired collection of songs that are laden with heart, soul and passion as they speak of the vicissitudes of life and love.
