Music Video: Maylee Todd - Baby's Got It
When Canadian singer/songwriter Maylee Todd says 'my grandfather was an escapist, my father was an Elvis impersonator', it is a clue that her music maybe something other than conformist. Making music that she describes as a mix of 'jazz, to funk, to reggae, to commercial R&B, and of course hip hop...Tropicalia and Bossa Nova', Todd says she 'can't even imagine a time when I didn't love music. I always knew I wanted to sing and perform'. She got her start in music performing in bands such as Henri Faberge and the Adorables and Woodhands, moving on in 2010 to release her first album Choose Your Own Adventure, and has just released her follow up album 'Escapology', with Todd describing the album as being inspired by 'musicians like Patrice Rushen, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Dorothy Ashby, Alice Coltrane...a lot of the old-school cats: super talented, great arrangements, and who, like, got the funk'. Todd produced the album so she could 'round up all these elements that I feel so close to', with the first single 'Hieroglyphics' receiving airplay on BBC Radio 1, KCRW Los Angeles and J-Wave in Japan, and the follow up single 'Baby's Got It' carries on the soulful, funky groove of its predecessor.
Described as capturing 'the vintage 80's disco-boogie vibe', the infectious groove of 'Baby's Got It' is complemented with a video of eclectic, avant-garde imagery, much of which was filmed at Toronto's Artscape Gibraltar Point where Todd had spent time doing an artist residency, with the video later being nominated for the Prism Prize for Canadian music videos.
