Music Video: Mayaeni - Black Jeans
At first glance you may assume that Detroit singer/songwriter Mayaeni is simply fulfilling a destiny fated by the musical gods with the release of her Complex-produced, and Billboard featured, video for the self-described 'rock-and-soul with a touch of pop' of her song 'Black Jeans' as a Pepsi Pulse Spotlight artist - the Roc Nation signee inherited her guitar chops from her father who played alongside the likes of Sylvester, Jimmy Ruffin and Carl Carlton. To assume that would only make you half right - no doubt blessed with natural musical talent, the real key to Mayaeni's growing success is her work ethic.
Her songwriting ability complemented by the raw, soulful edge of her distinctive vocals, she began recording demos for other artists before going on to release an indie album in 2007 and tour the U.S. and Japan. After attracting the attention of, and co-writing with, multi-platinum producer/songwriter Toby Gad (Fergie - 'Big Girls Don't Cry', Beyonce - 'If I Where A Boy'), she went on to write further with the likes of writers/producers Boots Ottestad, Sam Bisbee, Martin 'Doc' McKinney and Linda Perry. Featuring in nationwide ad campaign for Converse and Target, she released her Cold Love EP in 2011, and the next year saw her top the Beatport charts with her song with Sander Van Doorn, 'Nothing Inside', a song she co-wrote with Justin Parker (Lana Del Ray - 'Video Games').
Having showcased her talents this year at SXSW, The Mint in Hollywood and New Music Seminar's 'New Music Nights' at Webster Hall in NYC, Mayaeni proves with the deft fret-work and rock-infused, soulful edge of 'Black Jeans' that she is Roc Nation's latest star-on-the-rise.
