Music Video: Lorde - Royals
The current 'Queen Bee' of New Zealand music, 17-year-old Lorde (Ella Yelich-O'Connor), says of her debut music video 'this song means a hell of a lot to me, and to others, and I guess what I tried to do is make something you could understand. A lot of people think teenagers live in this world like 'skins' every weekend or whatever, but truth is, half the time we aren't doing anything cooler than playing with lighters, or waiting at some shitty stop.'
Lorde burst onto the New Zealand music scene unannounced and shot straight to the top of the charts, the single 'Royals', with its intelligent swagger and swelling harmonies, going both to No. 1 and platinum status, and her EP 'The Love Club' clocked up 60,000 free downloads before going on sale, with her music catching the attention and praise of Grimes, Perez Hilton and Buzzfeed.
Spotted at 12 in a school talent show, Lorde signed with Universal Music and studiously worked at songwriting with co-writer Joel Little, with Lorde saying 'we actually were introduced through my manager, I had been writing with a couple of different people and hadn't really found that sort of click point. My manager said, "Well, this guy wants to write with you if you are interested...and we just kinda hit it off, and it just worked'''. Looking to the future, Lorde says 'thanks for being with me all the way so far -- so much to come, such great heights. I'm just getting started.'
