Framed with the simplicity of a black-and-white video and an intimate guitar, the hushed, jazzy delicacy of UK singer/songwriter Emily Kay's voice, contemplative and brushed with a hint of melancholy, evokes a confessional, 'listen-closely' mood as she sings of looking to find comfort in a reassuring presence, her 'Soldier', with the beautiful fragility of her uniquely absorbing voice imbued with a quiet, knowing self-confidence.
Hailing from Birmingham, her musical beginnings were founded in gospel, with a later trip to New York sparking her interest in jazz music, and, ultimately, her desire to follow a career in music. Finding her sound at the intersection of soul, jazz and acoustic music, and taking inspiration from the likes of Miles Davis, Billie Holiday, Kirk Franklin and Angie Stone, Kay followed her dream to London, attending a Singing Musicianship course at Goldsmith University and playing the live circuit, including the renowned Ronnie Scotts.
The winner of the 2012 UK Unsigned Hype 'Best Acoustic Female' award, Kay's inimitable talent saw her first release 'Hold Me Closely', taken from her 'Emily Kay: Unplugged' EP, gain recognition from MTV, and the Wookie Remix of her latest track, 'Soldier', has received airplay on Kiss FM, Choice FM and BBC 1Xtra 'First Play'.
