Lil Rice & Ollie Clark Have The 'Turtle Blues'
By definition legends are inimitable, so it is not often that when you hear someone's re-imagining of a given icon's classic you get that little frisson of excitement that acknowledges a worthy homage. Already familiar with the U.K.'s Lil Rice and her instinctive capacity for gut-deep expression, we found our ears immediately intrigued by her and collaborator Ollie Clark's take on Janis Joplin's 'Turtle Blues'. Accompanied by the bluesy brooding of Clark's deft guitar work, Rice effortlessly showcases the raw, rasp-flecked swagger and primal, soulful confidence of her arrestingly passionate voice as she takes to the Joplin classic with her distinctively uninhibited verve. Navigating subtle inflections and bluesy phrasing as if to the manor born, Rice winds things up with a suitably barbed-wire-over-gravel, throat-shreddingly Joplin-esque finish that lovingly recalls faint echoes of Monterey and Woodstock.
