KIYAN Shows You There Are No "LIMITS"
Imagine if Beyoncé and Patti LaBelle had a godson from Mercury. Now, add a rich, tactile voice that moves like water through every color from gritty, dirty soul (complete with runs that are as technically impressive as they are easy and familiar), to a warm baritone, and an explosive register that extends up the octaves far beyond what you’ll ever expect. The instrument that KIYAN possesses is trained, yet wild.
KIYAN is unapologetic and proud when he talks about “LIMITS”, his newest single. The track features a sample from Mr. Carmack’s Bang Vol. 3, which he claims he fell in love with as soon as he felt the mix of the sentimental retro synth with the heavy, industrial hip-hop rhythms. The song details the young man’s exchanges with a lover whom he feels betrayed by, and explains this in an interview with JD Urban of Everyday People Project.
Drawing on his lifetime of being a musician, he claims it was the moment he realized he didn’t have “the magic touch” for the piano (despite his self-accompaniment) that his voice really came alive. Since then, he hasn’t stopped creating. From the jazz-influenced alt-rock band Amnesiac to his own solo work as of late, KIYAN has moved to the true eclectic nature of creativity; flaunting his ability to create rich piano ballads and smooth soul grooves as easily as psychedelic “grit-hop” and trap anthems.
It is the absolutely candid nature with which he speaks, writes, and sings that is both disarming and alarming. He is fearless about his emotions, provocative and challenging, yet timid and calculated. It is the wise naivety he emanates that leaves his audiences, regardless of size, refreshed.
