Jay-Z's new power move with Samsung - Magna Carta Holy Grail
After strategically calling his media-driven trip to Cuba as a "cultural affair", Roc Nation's Jay-Z has done another bold power move. He's partnered up with Samsung (the world's #1 smartphone maker) on their campaign "The Next Big Thing" along with industry veteran Rick Rubin, artist/producer Pharrell Williams, Timbaland, and Swizz Beatz, for his 12th album "Magna Carta Holy Grail".
Now what sets this album apart is how strategic the partnership was setup and how it was announced. The album doesn't drop until July 4, and only Samsung Galaxy smartphone users would be able to listen to the album before anyone else for free - a full 72 hours ahead of the release date (3 days ahead of the release) -- A privilege that iPhone users are probably jealous of. The first million users to download the app on June 24th will be able to receive the music through the app (Recipients won’t be able to share it until the official release date.) Now if that wasn't interesting enough, Samsung has already coughed up the money and bought 1 Million copies of the album (that nobody has even heard of) for $5 a piece.. which technically makes the album Platinum selling by the RIAA. But will Nielsen (the company behind the Billboard charting system) count those copies as legit consumer bought copies? It's a totally new distribution system, and again points out that this industry is ever changing along with technology.
"The album is about, like this duality of how do you navigate through this whole thing, through success, through failures, through all this and remain yourself," Jay-Z tells his collaborators.
