Interview: Trevor Wesley
You tweeted out "It aint about who's better, its about who's different!" For people that don't know you, what makes you different from other artists?
Music today lacks something very important. something that I believe is MANDATORY in the art. Today's mainstream music lacks true emotion, and even TALENT. Artists in this day and age care more about what they look like far more than what they sound like! Back in the day people worked together because it made sense and because they genuinely "vibed" and connected with each other. I feel this music industry has evolved to be such a business oriented establishment that the ART of it is dwindling away.
What makes me different I believe, is that I am genuinely PASSIONATE about what I do. I say that meaning that I love creating music and expressing my emotions how ever I choose to do so! I am different because I REFUSE to give someone who is a so called "business man" the power of my creativity. People in this world LOVE real music. Not all music should be made for the "club".
Music is so powerful! It's meant to make you FEEL something, so that later in life when you hear that one song that gave you a certain feeling, it immediately transforms you right back that amazing feeling again! I am different because I represent true music! If I didn't, it would be a disrespectful disservice to God and the talent I was blessed with.
"Dream" seems to be your most popular track off your latest EP "Only Live Once". Explain the lyrics behind the last line in the song "Even when I can't fall asleep, I Dream a Dream".
Dream is one of my favorite songs. I remember writing it and having it just flow out so easy. I started playing piano, and singing the melody and the words came naturally! My favorite songs always end up being the ones that I wrote quickly because i'm not over thinking it, it just comes out genuinely! haha "Even when I can't fall asleep, I dream a dream" explains itself! When i'm not sleeping in my bed, I continue to dream about what I want! visualizing and discovering what it is you want in life is the key to GETTING IT! Take a step everyday towards your goals and dreams, because if you don't put in hard work, it may end up being just a fantasy!
Tell us about one of your "Dreams". Which one sticks out the most? (talk about a dream that haunted or inspired you.)
I don't have any particular dreams I've had that stuck with me. If I had to say, I would say I was in school and fell asleep in class and had that feeling like I was falling! I woke up all quick and fell out of my chair, drool on my arm and all! *laughs*
Your music incorporate a vast amount of live instrumentals. It doesn't sound manufactured. It's rich in musical flavor! If you have to pick one instrumental to tell your life story, which one would you pick and why?
I would definitely choose the piano hands down! Only because I grew up with one and that's what propelled me to be the musician and vocalist that I am today!
How would you imagine your life to be if there was no music? (how would you express yourself? what do you see yourself doing besides music? have you ever thought about this?)
If i had no music... I would probably pursue acting a lot more! My Father is one of the most respected Camera Operators in the film industry. I grew up going to the set all the time. When I was younger I actually wanted to be an Actor and didn't even think about music. (all the while I was playing piano all the time) I was in Drama in middle school and freshman year in high school, and also took an Adult Improv/Acting class outside of school. I am a creative soul so I would most likely try and create and use my imagination!
Name the first song that comes to mind when you think of..
your darkest time: Probably hearing songs I made with people that I knew in my heart were HATERS! and that I just wanted to get on in this business! songs with people I had to FORCE to please them creatively... But I don't even listen to those or know where they are cause I wasn't allowed to leave the studio with music
when you felt inspired: My friend Paris Strother has an all girl group called "KING. Paris, her sister Amber, and they're sister from another mother Anita! I've seen them grow, write, and create music since they started as a group back at Paris's house for her birthday party gathering... now they are opening up for Prince and doing shows with Erika Badu... I am inspired when I listen to they're EP. REAL MUSIC and TRUE TALENT! Not to mention Paris makes ALL the music and produces it! It Inspires me tremendously and makes me think of the struggle/pay off of hard work and dedication! Like I said in the previous question. Music should make you feel something and create an emotional memory and they're music did that for me!
a chill-out / lazy day: First thing I thought of was Pink Floyd's song "Us and Them". In High school I was Obsessed with Pink Floyd. I obviously was a bit lazier listening to that!
the time when you spot a spectacular looking woman: Anytime i'm at a club and Pharrell and/or Snoop Dogg come on the women dancing for some reason look way sexier than when any other songs are playing!
