Interview: Trevor Jackson - talks hobbies, Grammy's Red Carpet, and studio time w/ Harvey Mason Jr, Rico Love
Trevor Jackson, although only 16-years-old, is a young talent that isn't only poised to overcome the hurtle of his music career, but also has a solid direction when it comes to his acting career. Trevor was cast as Kris McDuffy in the Disney Channel Original hit movie Let It Shine, which is currently the #1 movie of the year across kids 6-11, tweens and teens. On top of honing his acting career, Trevor is taking the next step in his career and has opened the doors musically. After premiering his debut music video "Like We Grown" the young talent has averaged about 74K views in less than 3 days since his debut and has doubled that number to 140K views in 6 days since it's premiere. We spoke with Trevor and briefly went over some of his recent spotlight at the Grammys, and his new single.
Talk to us a bit about the video and what was your favorite spot? (the party, the balcony)
My favorite part of creating the video was the dancing in the alley way with my co-star Zendaya Coleman. She came to my "Let It Shine" movie premiere. She was kind enough to lend her talents to my video project. I think it was a great match and am very happy with the video.
You seem to have a bunch of hobbies. You're a Singer, Songwriter, Actor, Dancer & Capoeirista. We were wondering if you were also a Ninja by any chance...
*laughs* I am actually an undercover ninja, but you probably never seen me because you're not supposed to know about undercover ninjas. *laughs* I love all martial art movies. I think it's key where you can also do my own stunts. Well -- I don't all my stunts. All the high risk stunts are obviously done by someone else.
You recently attended the Grammy's. Was that the first time? What was your favorite moment?
That was an amazing experience! I never would have dreamed I would be walking down the red carpet. At the event I was really excited to meet have Wiz Khalifa and his wife Amber Rose. That moment really stuck out for me since he told me to "Keep doing what I'm doing". I also met 2 Chainz, and countless other celebrities. The artists on stage that really captivated me were Rihanna, Bruno Mar, and Jack White's performances.
Aaron Bay-Schuck (SVP of A&R at Atlantic Records) has taken you under his wing. He's a pretty important guy and has fostered other great careers in the music industry. How did that relationship come about?
I met with Aaron in Los Angeles and also vibed out with him in NYC afterward. He had the same vision as I did musically so that was another great match. Hes a great guy and has allowed me to work with countless individuals in the industry that already have a profile built up. Because of Aaron I was able to work with Mike J who really knew how I wanted to express myself musically. Harvey Mason Jr from Underdogs was another person who he linked me up with... Rico Love, and more. Tom Maffei, my co-manager , is also another instrumental person in my career.
