Interview: Selah Sue -- The promising talent that is blowing up worldwide
Coming from Belguim, how is the music different from the rest of the world? (do they use more drums, melodies, etc?)
There are a lot of good bands and big talents in Belgium, but not a lot of hiphop and soul. More rockmusic and electronic bands. Which is cool because I'm a big DNB-dubstep fan.
You started to play the guitar when you were 15 years old, and started singing a bit later. Tell us a little bit about why you chose to learn guitar first and what prompted you to sing after..
I had the sudden need to play an instrument. It would be piano or guitar, and cause of the fact a guitar is transportable, i chose the guitar. I had three years of classic training, which was usefull cause I learned 'picking' on the guitar because of that. But they didn't want to learn u chords there, so I quit and learned chords through the internet.
Then I got bored of only playing guitar, so I started to sing with it. First false, then better and better. Discovered I had a good hearing.. my voice changed in puberty.. I listened to a lot of music.. and the result was writing and singing own songs
Lauren Hill's "Unplugged" album was a large inspiration for you.. what about the project inspired you though? Was it how she played the guitar? Was it the melodies she sang?..
She had everything for me.. In the beginning she was my big inspiration. The first time (and only) I had an idol. Her melodies, sound of her voice, rythm on guitar and vocals. Lyrics..
She can sing AND rap, as the best. Still now, never heard somebody as good as her.
You've had the same haircut since you were 13 years old.. Do think you'll ever change it? or is it a signature look that you are planning on keeping?
I just feel better when my hair is big.. I feel insecure when it's flat, it even took a few months before I wanted to show it to my boyfriend. Its started more as an insecurity than a as a statement: I thought my head was too big for my hear. Proportionwise it has to be perfect.
Now I just like it better, it fits me, I'm used to it. Maybe one day, if I have kids and don't want to be recognized on the streets, I'll wear it flat. We'll see
How did you get to work with Cee-Lo Green? (The US version of his album included your duet but was cut off on his album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6lL54T6eOs)
It went all very fast, In only one week it was recorded. Me in Brussels, he in the Us.
He liked my voice very much and sent me a few intrumentals he didn't use. (We contacted him first if he would like to do something together, a featuring on a track of mine for example.) I sang on it, sent it back, and he put it on his album as well. Very cool.
You had a chance to open up for Prince while he was on tour. Talk to us a little bit about your experience with Prince..
Yeah it was amazing. After I played he invited me in his backstage, we talked really well for half an hour. He saw my show, and liked it a lot. He said he could see I breath music.
Predicted me a great future, gave me advice: i should learn the business well..
I asked him if he was happy, and he said yes. We should be, with a job like this!
Who are some other artists that you would love to open up for...
Everything that's good. And there are A LOT. But Erykah Badu or Lauryn Hill would be ultimate probably.
Who are some artists that you would like to open up for you..
Everything that's good and needs more recognition.. Something that deserves to be more known. A LOT of bands. I would go for my close friends of Addikted Kru Sound or Bodyspasm. But its electro & dubstep, so that would be for my aftershow!!
