Interview: Las Supper - the band bringing back the essence of funk / soul with 'Back to the Future'
What’s old is always new again and the super group Las Supper is bringing you Back to the Future with their debut performance and album title. Comprised of Show Tyme (Singer, Songwriter, Producer), Lifted Crew (NYC Hip-Hop band), and Smooth Operator a.k.a. Big Daddy Kane, these three powerhouses merge to revive the classic funk/soul sound with a contemporary vibe.
Las Supper made their debut performance at the infamous Blue Note Jazz Club in Greenwich Village Monday night (3/11). As the horns flared, the crowd became antsy as to what their ears would soon experience. Las Supper opened with an uptempo polyphony then paid homage to The Temptations with their rendition of Papa Was A Rolling Stone. Soul clapping and fervent singing from Show Tyme, Nicky Cake, Erin, and Yvette united a crowd reminiscent of 1972. The classic hit transitioned into their first single I Believe in Love Again, a lighthearted tune with an old-timer feel-good melody. More songs were performed; most of them more soulful and featured longer verses from Big Daddy Kane, but of course the party didn't stop until Kane set it straight like it was ’88. Performing gems like Ain’t No Half Stepping and RAW was the icing on the cake. After the show we spoke briefly to Joel "MEGA" Gonzalez (Trumpet, Percussions) and Yvette Rovira (Background Vocals).
How did Lifted Crew meet?
Joel: Lifted Crew met in Boston at Berkley College.
Yvette: Erin and I met when we were 12 in Florida. Then we came to Boston for college. That’s how we met the rest of Lifted Crew. Oh! And Joel and I are engaged.
Wow. So you guys are just one big happy family. How did you guys hook up with Big Daddy Kane and Show Tyme?
Yvette: We toured and performed with Slick Rick. Big Daddy Kane was working on an album with Show Tyme and Slick Rick referenced us. We’ve all worked together for about two years and performed once this summer but tonight was our official debut performance.
Is Las Supper an official band or is this temporary?
Yvette & Joel: No, we plan to stay together as a super group and continue touring.
Where is the next show?
Joel: Our next performance is at Essence [Festival].
