We are sure you've probably heard of her -- actually we are almost positive you have! She's recently been nominated for an mtvU Woodie Award for Breaking Artist of the Year, has surpassed 10 Million views on Youtube, and has already hit the the #1 spot on the Billboard charts. She's in the same league of upcoming artist such as Bruno Mars, Ke$ha, Far East Movement, and Jessie J. Her name is Dev. She's the talented artist behind songs "Like a G6", "Booty Bounce", and "Bass down Low". Dev, thanks for taking some time out and joining us on TheNext2Shine.com!
Let's start off at the beginning. The Cataracs, your producers, are probably somewhat of a family figure to you since they initially discovered you as an artist. Your relationship with them has evolved over time and it seems as if you exclusively work with them now. How would you characterize your work with them? How has your relationship blossomed with them?
They're like my brothers. They’re my best friends. I lived with them for a year and a half and have worked with them for 3. They know me pretty damn well and I can say our relationship has blossomed quite well over the past few years. They’ve taught me a lot lol
In your song "Me" you describe how the record labels "couldn't figure me out, [but its] funny how they all want a piece of me now”. At what point in your career do you think this epiphany occurred? Has this tension between artist and label changed your music?
I guess it’s always a message I wanted to get across for the past few years of trying to find a home label. Nothing changed my music, I just found a label that didn’t need explaining, they got it. It took a couple of years for some people to get it, but i also think it took me a couple years to get it right as well.
You've been shipped off to Costa Rica along with The Cataracs to work on new songs off your upcoming album. Why Costa Rica? Would you have gone anywhere else?
We wanted good vibes. we wanted to escape the concrete jungle of our busy downtown LA lives. and what better place that Costa Rica???!! ;]
We went through our music stacks and associated your musical style between a mixture of Lady Gaga and Ke$ha. With the music industry conforming to popular demand, how would you differentiate yourself?
I guess people feel safe comparing other artists with each other. I just do me.
2010 was an amazing year for you! You placed yourself on the map and literally had everyone singing along with the word of "Like A G6". What can fans expect from you in 2011?
More good shit! I’m going in!
