Interview: Conor Maynard
We featured this bright talent in July of 2010 under our Youtube Talent section not really understanding how big this talent was going to get. Conor Maynard, the UK-bred talent, has taken the musical world by storm in a little less than a year of getting signed. When competing against UK heavyweights Delilah, Michael Kiwanuka, Lana Del Rey and Lianne La Havas, he managed to win MTV's Brand New Award for 2012 by owning a whopping 45% of the votes. He's young, talented, and is definitely TheNext2Shine!
You were single-handedly producing, filming, and editing your own Youtube clips when you first started showcasing your talent online. It seems as though you had a private meeting with NeYo one day and that's where the industry buzz all started. Take us through what happened at that closed-door meeting...
The conversation actually happened over skype - at about 1230am - which is why the door was closed as the rest of my family were asleep. I didn't know what to expect - I half thought that it was going to be my mates, laughing at me...in my Buzz Light Year pajamas. But basically, Ne-Yo was telling me he was really impressed by the videos and that's when all the label hype started as word got around that he wanted to sign me.
Drake is one of your favorite artists. Have you met him before? (describe the emotions, the conversation, and where you met him) If not, what would you do/say to get his attention if he walked into the room and it was just you two sitting there..
Well, I was actually really close to meeting him, I was lucky enough to go backstage at his gig in Glasgow to watch my good friend Rita Ora supporting him. However, we happened to miss each other so I took a few nights off to cry myself to sleep...BUT - I was in a radio station recently and he had left me a message saying "congratulations on the record and that he hopes to meet me"....that was craaazy...
Out of all the Youtube covers that you did, which one sticks out the most to you and why?
My cover of Mother Lover by Lonely Island and Justin Timberlake - me and my friend Anth did this one for the mammas out there on Mothers Day. Definitely a must see. Good times.
If you were to pick one instrument to be which one would you be?
A flute.... (I won't go into details as to why....Did you happen to see American Pie?)
You're still young at 19-years-old, but you seem to be dominating the music scene at the moment with your music and your dedicated fans right behind you. What was the biggest struggle you had when first developing your image and how did you overcome it?
I just wear and do what feels comfortable to me. As soon as I feel uncomfortable, I know its not right for me. Because I got known through youtube, I only had me and my youtube fans to listen to - so we will hopefully go all the way....boom!!!
