I Listened to 'Folded Like Fabric' Everyday For a Month...
Have you ever caught wind of a sound that instantly draws you in? Captivates you, becomes an immediate ear worm and has you enthralled with excitement to find a piece of music that really resonates with you? In the midst of sifting through a whole lot of different genres, vibes and aesthetics each and everyday, it could seemingly become oversaturated with sounds that are a mimic of each other.
Folded Like Fabric have broken the barriers of this norm - a two piece project from Hastings, UK creating an audial masterpiece that is undoubtedly a sound of their own. Jay Mooncie & Connor Sims have been rather under the radar, but not hiding well enough for me to find! I stumbled upon their debut EP, I Tried, and although consisting of only four short tunes, I was addicted.
It is the absolute precision and apparent attentiveness to their creations that make Folded Like Fabric stand out. A mystical, joyous energy is brought to the table in just a handful of tracks - my first to be heard was "Hunting For Reason."
Once I heard this record, it became apparent to me that it wasn't leaving my repertoire anytime soon. Without even realizing it, I had listened to the duo every single day for a month straight... Here's my thoughts.
I Tried is a magnificently loving project - by this I mean that Jay and Connor make you feel... almost special while listening to it. The songs will give you a sense of being wrapped in a warm blanket with a sense of glistening safety and comfort. The opening track, "Patiently," serves an initially pleasant indie vibe, with proud percussion and warm guitar tones. Following, "I Tried" and "You Said" (my personal favorite) are majestic and enchanting with the ability to find new aspects you enjoy every time you listen. Trust me - I've heard these four songs endlessly and I'm still finding new tidbits to fall in love with all over again. Only two minds had put together this musical present, yet each instrument's incorporation is strategic and impressive. Sounds of guitar glide through the EP with ease, holding your hand as you take on the 15 minute journey. The rhythm section is strong and, lyrically, you'll find their words to be significantly poetic and rather charming. With vocals smooth and effortless paired with alluring bells, aquatic keys and sounds of ambience... This project is nothing less than dreamy.
So, in case you haven't picked up on it... My ears are overjoyed with elegance, witty musical talent, emotional investment and ethereal energy as I enjoy Folded Like Fabric. It is an absolute pleasure to discover truly conscious music - and that I have confidently found in these two. Watch out for this noteworthy duo. This is only the beginning.
