From cleaning up at her country's music awards to a headlining show at the famed Apollo Theater, New Zealand's Aaradhna has more than made her mark over the last few years. One listen to her voice, and you'll know exactly why her 2012 album 'Treble & Reverb' saw her win 'Album' and 'Artist Of The Year' at home in New Zealand: smoothly soulful and rich of tone, her voice is delivered with the kind of maturely expressive emotion that effortlessly seduces with every alluring inflection and nuance. Having spent the last couple of years in the studio with producer Jeffrey Scott working on her new album, 'Brown Girl', Aaradhna is back to give fans a hint of what to expect with a snippet of 'Welcome To The Jungle'.

A departure from the signature 'retro-metro' throwback r&b/soul sound of 'Treble & Reverb', 'Welcome' offers an equally arresting vibe with its more contemporary, streamlined r&b ethos. With a thumping kick and tribal percussion being shrouded by the imposing swell of the background vocal motif's soulful hue, Aaradhna's sultry vocal texture offers up a cryptically ominous invitation as the track's febrile aura is burnished by bleeping synth artifacts and an intricately fervid guitar.

VILLAS are a new force in the electronic R&B world. The new group is a duo made up of members Miel and D’Ari, artistically pushing the boundaries of what is considered "the norm." Topics of songs include monogamy, what isolation feels like, and expectations from others. We think it is perfect to explore and observe through music because music allows the individual to healthily release whatever the mind is occupied.

The duo released their first EP, Medicine, on May 20th of this year. Like stated above, the subject matter is very honest and difficult. The EP was co-produced by D'Ari from the groups farmhouse and Jake Birch from Brooklyn, Toronto, and Montana. Also, the music was mixed by Jay Paul Bicknell, known for the Grammy and Oscar nominated Beauty Behind the Madness by the Weeknd, at Interscope Studios.

The track "Life Jacket" is a stand out (listen below.) Right off the bat, the song starts off the lyric line,

"don't want a boy, I want a man, but I crucify the one who understands."

The line "If you want me, I'll be under water" is repeated and drives a chorus that will easily get stuck in your head. We listen and are immediately immersed in an atmosphere of the nightlife.

The most notable and popular song on the EP is probably "Fuckin Round On You," which is a brutally honest story of someone having relations with people outside of their main partner. The music video for the track shows random stock footage of couples doing various activities and overall is a mind-boggling trip. This group brings something unbelievably artistic to the table and deserves respect for having no limits.

Purchase "Medicine" on iTunes!

Nothing's Real, the upcoming debut album from Shura, is fast approaching. In preparation for a smashing July release, the UK artist has teased with a brand new single. It's called "What's It Gonna Be?" -- and we can tell you precisely what it will be: the start to a sensational dance party.

The retro sounds flood under Shura's pleasantly pristine vocals, topping off yet another solid tune. "What's It Gonna Be?" follows up single "The Space Tapes," for which she released a video for last month. Both singles fit together like opposite sides of a puzzle -- distinct in soundscape but come together like kindred spirits.

On "What's It Gonna Be?" Shura said,

“This record is about fancying someone and maybe having a kind of connection and realizing that it’s probably not gonna happen.”

"Nothing Even Matters" is one of the most vibed to tracks of the decade, in our opinion of course. Lauryn Hill and D'Angelo bodied the tune back in '98, and many years later, it's still being honored. Kevin Ross and Kirby recently took it's composition and made it their own, taking their own verses and coming together in the end to paint a soundscape of passion and love.

Hear the track below --

Cosima Jaala is one of the busiest bees in Melbourne’s thriving music scene. Those already acquainted can thank Hiatus Kaiyote for the familiarity – they’ve hyped both Jaala’s eponymous group by inviting them to open for a stretch of the their Australian dates on the Choose Your Weapon tour last year, and bassist Paul Bender recorded the band’s debut in 2015 as well. The affinity seen here is no coincidence; apart from sharing the same hometown, both Jaala and her equally vicious other group Mangelwurzel approach conventional songwriting structure with the same renaissance outlook as Hiatus Kaiyote. However, while HK repaves the road with lush, grand gestures of cool funk and future jazz, Jaala annihilates the standard four-on-the-floor song to make way for a more manic, heart-on-sleeve, spastic workout.

Jaala – “War Song”

To give a sense of Jaala’s exhausting schedule, her self-titled eight-song debut Hard Hold was released in October, only to be followed in February by Gary, the first full-length LP from Mangelwurzel. To differentiate the two by claiming that Mangelwurzel is just “Jaala with horns” would be a trite purview. Boundaries are just as extinct on Gary, but with this outfit, Cosima makes a conscious effort to reach for new heights in experimental pop.

Mangelwurzel – “Everybody’s Friend”

Unfortunately, according to the band’s Facebook, Mangelwurzel’s “last show ever” took place back in April; a real shame considering their short lifespan, although Jaala continues to tour to this day with her titular group. Aside from her role as the act’s songwriter and namesake, Jaala is by no means a solo venture; the parts that make up the whole are exceptional in their own right, particularly drummer Maria Moles. Her style consists of heavy reliance on the ride cymbal, emulating the relaxed atmosphere of a 1950s jazz lounge, though not long before implementing her variety of calculated stuttering break-beats to retain order around Cosima’s jagged guitar arrangements.

Jaala – “Double Dutch”
