EXCLUSIVE Interview: The Princess of Beluga Heights - Auburn
Auburn, Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to answer some questions. Let's get into it! For most people, you're a new face within the industry today. Give us a little taste of how your music might sound like.
A good way to get a sense of my music is to forget the word "Genre". You'll get a good feel for my music once you let those walls come down. On my Youtube channel you have a better idea of what my sound is like. Sometimes its love, sometimes heartbreak, one minute i can rap, the next i can sing with raw acoustic. I don’t really like to compare myself to anyone else because music is art, we should expect something different. I do the type of music that feels right to me, and yes the genre is all over the place. In fact, we kid about my genre being “Auburn”.
You've already hit the studio with world-renown producer JR Rotem, and singer/songwriter Jason Derulo. Who else have you stepped into the studio with?
I have done songs with all of my Beluga family, IYAZ, MANN, Jason and Sean Kingston.
2009 and 2010 was a great year for upcoming artist such as Iyaz, Jason Derulo, Jay Sean, and Ke$ha to hit the mainstream market. What is the one thing that excites you the most when you think about the future? Where do you see yourself?
I'm just excited that my music will have the opportunity to be heard all over. That my music family will grow. I would say what excites me most, is knowing that whoever decides to listen will respect that I'm only making music, expressing myself the best way I know how. I'm also excited to know what my fans get out of my music, and how they relate.
Who gave you the nickname "Princess of Beluga Heights"? (why? why not "Queen"?) You also have another nickname of "Gabby G". Is Gabby your real name?
The nickname “Princess of Beluga Heights” was first a joke made by my manager. Surprisingly enough the same name was given to me by J.R shortly after, lol. At first I didn't like it because I was so brand new to the industry so I didn't feel I earned it yet. But I’ve embraced it, more like a honor. Everyone in my Beluga Heights family makes me feel like a Princess. As for Queen, NO. That something I know I have to grow in to. Gabby is derived from my middle name "Gabrielle" it’s a nick name my friends and family call me.“Gabby G” was just a name I adopted after my first time actually "RAPPING" lol, So it’s something my fans and I play with, but Auburn is my real name.
From the looks of it, your relationship with JR Rotem is very sturdy. Even though his production skills are unmatched, do you believe you will branch out and work with other producers? (is there an album/mixtape on the way?)
I don't know, theres just something about hearing that air horn at the beginning of my songs. JR and I have a very unique bond when making music. The sound we have can’t really be duplicated, Out of respect for JR and my Beluga Family, new production has been the furthest thing from my mind. We'll have to see what the future brings.
We are currently still making the album, we have more than enough songs to make the album, but I’m really picky, as is JR. So right now we're taking our time with finding the right songs and figuring out how to get my "all over the place sound" in one album.
