EXCLUSIVE Interview: The Fierce - Natalia Kills
By being discovered by Will.I.Am from the Black Eyed Peas, and working with A-list producers, Natalia Kills has earned her way into the entertainment world. She has developed her own personal taste in fashion, movies, and sounds that is directly seen in her musical projects. She's the next big thing, and we had a chance to speak one-on-one with her.
The music video for "Mirrors" just surpassed 2+ million views! How does that feel to know your video has been so well received?
Its great! I direct and co-direct all my music videos so i'm glad to share my passion with everyone..
How are you influenced by film noir?
I'm influence by all kinds of film… but everything does look better in black and white! I like films that use drama, suspense and violence to provoke our emotions. I love everything from Hitchock, Kubrick, David Lynch to Tarantino.
You seem to be within the inner loop of the fashion world. Who are your favorite fashion designers? What is your favorite item in your closet?
Hmm thats a tough question! I love Jeremy Scott, Vivienne Westwood and Castel Bajac- so playful and dramatic! I also love vintage and thrift shopping too. My favorite items are my Dsquared spine shoes and my Linda Farrow x Jeremy Scott smiley sunglasses.
If you could pick two people to collaborate with on your next project, who would they be?
I'd love to work with Kanye West, and I'd love to make a short film/video directed by Tarantino.
Do you feel any pressure to conform to one genre (pop, R&B, rock, etc.)?
Not especially. I have my own sound thats not subjective to any genre or time period. I've notice people have described me as "dark pop" ...my music is more confrontational than a lot of mainstream music… so I suppose Dark Pop fits… I think its pop music with an opinion. Axe wielding pop, revenge pop, kill your ex boyfriend pop… whatever fits!
Take us through how you were discovered by Will.I.Am. Were you performing on stage? Did you get introduced backstage? Or did you find the courage to go up to him and start singing?
I was introduced to him by his friend DJ Poet Name Life. We had met through a mutual comrade and he heard my demo on myspace and wanted Will to hear it so he drove me over to his house in the hills. I didn't know 'his friend' was Will so when we got to the house and I saw Will and Apple sitting there at the table I was like WTF! *laughter*
Can you tell us about the recording process for your new album and what we can expect?
My album PERFECTIONIST is a concept album … I'm a perfectionist… I think we all are to be honest. We're all looking for the best in everything in our lives- dating, career, appearance, money… my album is about the disappointments, frustrations and aspirations that come with looking for the ideal and finding out that nothing is every truly perfect. As far as the content- its certainly more aggressive than most songs at the moment. Its honest- I like to write my songs about all the things you would scream at an ex in an argument or a secret you would never tell. Those deliciously honest moments that we're afraid to confess are what make us who we are and we should celebrate them.
