ESKA Proves There Is No Substitute For Artistic Integrity
For the U.K.'s ESKA, 2015 is indeed turning out to be her time to shine. Already well regarded for her work with the likes of Grace Jones, Cinematic Orchestra, Zero 7 and Bobby McFerrin, with the release of her recent self-titled debut album ESKA found the spotlight deservedly cast in her direction. Having conducted an extensive, personally revelatory audit of the most essential elements of her artistic sensibility, ESKA delivered a captivating musical tour-de-force that was carved straight from her soul.
Drawing on her eclectically inspired musical upbringing - everything from Kate Bush and Joni Mitchell, to The Crusaders, Quincy Jones, Madonna and Wet Wet Wet and more - ESKA delved into her extensive bag of musical heroes and influences to find a deeply authentic musical sense of self. Eschewing conformity and compromise, she called on composer Matthew Herber, producer Louis “Slipperz” Hackett and singer/songwriter/producer Dave Okumu (Jessie Ware) to realize the audacity, creativity and wonder of her sonic horizons. A beguiling amalgam of everything from water-filled glass bottles, broomsticks, harmoniums and Speak-and-Spells to more traditional instrumentation, ESKA's sonic palatte proved to be as comfortingly familiar as it was compellingly progressive in its enchanting, experimental ambition. Allying literarily allusive lyricism with intimately confessional personal reflections, the pointed, knowing emotion and smoky subtleties of ESKA's distinctive vocals gained effusive acclaim from influential tatstemakers the likes of Boiler Room, Stamp The Wax, Rookie Max, Q Magazine and Complex.
Articulate, mature and fired with a fierce belief in the sanctity of artistic integrity, ESKA has marked herself out as an artist of rare self-possession and creative courage. Uncompromising in pursuing her ambition to fully realize an artistic vision that challenges, engages and requires more than just the passing attention of the listener, ESKA proves that authentic, true artistry is bound by nothing more than the imagination.
ESKA's debut album, 'ESKA', is now available on iTunes.
