Ella Mai's "Change" Is One To Love
UK-native Ella Mai has debuted her highly-anticipated EP Change today. DJ Mustard has been widely credited in building a bunch of hype around Mai after he signed her to his 10 Summers label. On top of that Mustard executive produced the EP.
Ella Mai describes the work: "It’s about finding someone new and knowing how to appreciate what he’s giving you in comparison to what you were dealing with."
The latest visual is a video for "10,000 hours" shares a story of Mai daydreaming of a perfect love as she pictures herself being romantic with a certain someone. The song itself has well-timed bass grooves, hip hop hi-hat patterns, and smooth vocals. "In the book Outliers, Malcolm Gladwell says you need to do something for 10,000 hours in order to have it down pat. My song applies that same theory to love," stated the singer. In comparison, "Down" kicks off the EP and is one that is overwhelmingly more mellow and emotional. Here the singer is eager to appear valuable to someone she is infatuated with. At the end of the track we hear Mai speak about using the "relationship" title with someone and being cautious about it.
"Lay Up" pulls the hip hop side out of the musician the most. With a take-no-prisoners attitude, Mai focuses on rhythmic pronunciations over an almost trap beat. Overall, each of the 5 tracks on Change tackles a similar subject matter with her trying to figure out what love is all about and what's the best way to express your love.
