Cage The Elephant’s New Album Will Come A Little Closer After Released Single
Is this a Black Keys song? you ask, deceitfully played by the sound of what you’re first hearing. There are those familiarities of a guitar texturized with significant distortion, so you wouldn’t be completely wrong from guessing the semblance– once you realize Dan Auerbach isn’t the voice singing, No she don’t mess around. Because that opening line is actually coming from the mouth of Cage the Elephant’s frontman, Matt Shultz.
A couple days ago, Cage the Elephant premiered “Mess Around,” their first single off their forthcoming album Tell Me I’m Pretty. With Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys & The Arcs, as their Grammy-snatching producer of choice, there seems to be a new direction setting foot in this album, giving the listener a paradoxical impression of both the expected and unexpected. Cage didn’t limit their guidance to only one guy but looked to the vision of many others as well, from the riffs of garage rocker Jay Reatard to the energetic, melodious hip-hop of OutKast. To excite their fans further, Cage released a video for “Mess Around” which shares the song’s vibrancy using old sci-fi horror clips from a French illusionist and filmmaker named Georges Méliès. It is Cage’s attempt to foster yet another strange project in their outlandish streak of videos. So take it or leave it. If you want to weird yourself out to volcanoes, witches, and a creepy-faced sun, then stay awake to this new Tell Me I’m Pretty single, because after all, there’s no rest for the wicked.
