The Brother and Sister Duo, Wardell, Prepare 'Love / Idleness' Debut Album
The future is looking quite bright for sister/brother duo Wardell, who seem to be popping up more and more these days. And while they could have relied on their family's fame, Sasha and Theo Spielberg (yes, as in Steven) are out to make a name for themselves this year, with their debut album "Love / Idleness" coming out early next month. We got a chance to see them at the very intimate YouTube Space New York just after they had two sold out nights at other venues in the city.
A tiny, dark, cozy room filled with just a handful of people eagerly waited for the band to start. Excited murmurs could be heard throughout the crowd about their creative video for the single "Funny Thing", along with chatter about where they had seen them play this past fall. The band came in and instantly there was a sort of warmth that filled the space. The incredibly charming and humbling duo comfortably started their set, genuinely happy to play a preview of their upcoming project . Their relaxed attitudes, and riffing banter between songs made it feel like we were just a small group of friends in someone's living room.
But goodness, Sasha Spielberg's voice. Wow. Although the venue itself was quite small, that didn't hinder Wardell from bringing their energy. They could very well have been playing a stage at an outdoor festival. They're poppy, they're groovy, they're bright. At times their songs sound like they are from some sort of wonderful 'Fleetwood Mac' disco lovechild. And other times they drifted into a more "slow jams" feeling as they put it, with a bit of darkness.
"Love / Idleness" comes out on February 10th, with a release party at Mercury Lounge the following night.
