Bridget Kelly readies for impact - Every Girl
Roc Nation artist Bridget Kelly is up next on the label's superstar roster that includes J. Cole and Melanie Fiona. Her rise to stardom began when she provided the female vocals to Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind" on his televised 9/11 concert in 2009 and continued into 2010 during the high-grossing Blueprint 3 tour. Ready to impact the industry with her own project, Kelly held a small get-together Tuesday night (Oct 18) and provided tastemakers the opportunity to review select tracks from her forthcoming EP, "Every Girl", as well as a beautifully raw acoustic performance of her Frank Ocean penned single, "Thinking About Forever". Her sound - judging from songs like the title track, "White Lies", and "Seek And Destroy" - is more aggressive than the "typical" R&B songstress and provides a welcomed alternative from the industry norm.
The music is much more gritty and hard-hitting than one would expect but it comes from a place of experience with a vibe all its own. Kelly's lyrics are far from flowery and appeal to the aggressive side of every woman who's been wronged or just wants to be loved. Kelly's direction is set and going as opposite from her peers as can be. She will continue to march to the beat of her own drum Wednesday night (Oct 19) when she plays NYC's SOBs, the same night that the teaser to her debut album, "Every Girl", is released for free via web.
