Bakko's Eclectic Urban Soul Makes Her One To Watch
While she may draw an at first glance comparison to the likes of Amy Winehouse and Erykah Badu with the smoky, sultry smolder of her confidently assured vocal delivery being combined with an effortlessly charismatic, self-possessed swagger, Georgian-born Bakko is without question her own woman. With the naturally seductive rasp of her vocal tone being evident in both her soulfully husky singing and complementary sing-song cadence, not to mention her fluent rapping, she channels a distinctive artistic sensibility that draws on classically soulful traditions while keeping its ear to the street, a uniquely adaptive musical skill set that allows her to seamlessly transition between genres.
Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, Bakko (Barbare Mchedlishvili) came to the U.S. at 6, spending time at art school and learning the guitar at age 12 during a return trip to Georgia, telling defynewyork.com that she 'always had a passion for music...especially soul music. When I realized that I had a voice and that people enjoyed listening to me, I decide that it is what I wanted to pursue for the rest of my life', in addition informing nowtunein.com that she is influenced by artists 'like Amy Winehouse who have the ability to change genres and make it their own...I'm also greatly influenced by Erykah Badu. Her creative style, neo-soul sound, lyrical content and all over delivery continues to amaze me...I've always been influenced by older generations of soul and jazz...like Al Green, Otis Redding and Gil Scott-Heron'.
Coming to notice with a viral video of her rapping, she recently performed for Jack Thriller's '16 Or Better', and has been whetting people's appetite for her own music with collaborations and live performances as she prepares for the release of her 'Seven Colors' EP, explaining about the project that 'each song represents a color. And I chose to do a color theme because there are so many colors of me, and each song has a different feel. Seven is also one of my favorite numbers. It also symbolizes the colors of the seven chakras in order, because I've been on such a mental and spiritual journey since I started this project, I feel like I want to make this ep more personal for you guys. Not just with sound but visually as well'.
